Saks Fifth Avenue finally stocks plus size designer pieces
According to the Huffington post, Saks Fifth Avenue in New York is going to carry plus size designer clothes! *pause for round of applause*. Saks plans to carry designers such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Akris, Armani, Carolina Herrera, Escada, Donna Karan, St. John, Oscar de la Renta, Max Mara, Valentino, Michael Kors, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Fendi and Roberto Cavalli in size 14 and certain pieces will be available in sizes 16-20. Although Saks has made an attempt to cater to fuller figured women in the past with Salon Z, which carries sizes 14-24, the selection was somewhat limited and the designer labels were few and far between.
I applaud Saks for recognizing that not all women are stick skinny (which is a good look anyway) and women come in all fabulous shapes and sizes. Even though carrying designer labels in size 14 is somewhat limited, at least its a start. I think the fashion industry is FINALLY beginning to realize women want to see other women that look like them in magazines and ads and want designers to make clothes to fit all sizes not just a 0 or a 2. The thing that I don’t think designers realize is that women will pay money, good money for clothes that are specifically made to flatter their size, shape and figure.
This kind of ties in to the perceptions of beauty I highlighted in my previous post. We as women, specifically women of color are bombarded by the media with images and perceptions (accurate or not) of what is “main stream” beauty. Unfortunately, the majority of the images don’t look like most of us and directly or indirectly cause us look at ourselves in the mirror with a more critical eye. Try not to fall into this trap, don’t let anything or anyone else define your beauty for you. Period.
